Why Gaptrium™ Education exists

Research intelligence
should not be a privilege.

Commercial research tools charge per seat. That means PhD students at well-funded institutions have access to powerful gap analysis, while students at developing-country universities do not. Gaptrium™ Education changes that. One flat fee, one domain, everyone in.

🎓
Democratic access

A student at a university in Nairobi gets exactly the same analytical capabilities as a student at Oxford. The tool is identical. The price to the institution is flat. Knowledge gaps should not be financial gaps.

🔬
Better research output

Systematic reviews, literature gap analysis, corpus mapping — tasks that used to require expensive proprietary tools or weeks of manual work. With Lacuna, a master's student can produce the same quality gap analysis as a senior researcher.

🛡️
Zero data risk

Student documents, dissertation drafts, unpublished research — none of it ever leaves the student's browser. No university data governance issue. No GDPR risk. No vendor data retention. Architecture is the compliance.

How institutional access works

Four steps.
Then it just works.

01
Institution contacts us

Email hello@lacunalabs.eu with your institution name and primary domain (e.g. university.edu). We send a quote and invoice.

02
Domain is activated

After payment, we activate your domain. No software to install. No IT configuration. No user list to manage.

03
Students register

Any student or researcher with a verified @youruniversity.edu email registers at lacunalabs.eu/login. Education tier is assigned automatically.

04
Full access, immediately

All Scope features available instantly. No waiting. No approval workflows. The student opens the platform and starts analysing.

What students get

The same tool used by
professional researchers.

Gaptrium™ Education includes everything in Gaptrium™ Scope — the same deterministic engine, same visualisations, same reproducible methodology. Cited in Springer Nature Systematic Reviews 2026 among 388 analytical tools for evidence synthesis.

Heat Map

Which papers in your literature actually treat your topic — and which only cite it briefly? The Heat Map separates central focus from peripheral mention across your entire corpus, so you see where the real coverage is.

Gap Analysis

Which concepts appear in your field but are absent from your reading list? Gap Analysis surfaces the underexplored territory in your own corpus — the starting point for a defensible research contribution.

Pulse Research

Has this topic already been exhausted, or is there still room to contribute? Pulse Research shows how publication output has moved year by year — helping you argue the timeliness of your focus before your supervisor does.

Timeline · Clusters

Timeline shows when terms peaked, declined, or emerged across your documents — revealing how the field shifted inside your own corpus. Clusters groups papers by shared vocabulary, so you can see which documents belong together and which are outliers worth investigating.

Consensus vs Controversy

Which terms in your field are still being fought over? Contested topics are where new contributions land hardest. Lacuna classifies each term as settled, debated, or silent — so you can position your work on the right ground.

AI Advisor

Ask your corpus questions in plain language and get answers grounded in your documents — not in the model's general knowledge. Bring your own API key; your files and queries never leave your browser.

Who is eligible

Universities and research
institutions worldwide.

The Education plan is designed for any institution with a mission of teaching, research, or technological development — not just universities.

🎓
Universities and colleges

Public or private higher education institutions, national or international. Access via institutional email domain — any student, faculty member, or researcher with a @youruniversity email.

🔬
Federal research institutes

Technology and research centres linked to government ministries or agencies — such as Embrapa, Fiocruz, INPE, and international equivalents like Fraunhofer, CSIRO, and VTT.

🏥
Public health institutes

Health agencies, epidemiological surveillance institutes, and clinical research centres with regular scientific output — where evidence analysis and literature gap detection is central to the work.

⚗️
Innovation and R&D centres

Corporate laboratories with formal research activity, technology parks, and innovation institutes that produce or consume scientific literature as part of their development process.

📚
Libraries and information systems

University libraries and institutional library systems that provide research tools to the academic body. The Education plan covers the entire user base without individual licences.

✉️
Not sure?

If your institution has a mission of research and knowledge production, it is likely eligible. Contact us — we evaluate each case individually and offer a free 30-day pilot before any commitment.

Note for Brazilian research institutes

Institutes linked to MCTI, MAPA, MS, and other federal agencies may contract the Education plan through direct procurement exemption — the annual value of £5,988 is below the threshold provided in Law 14.133/2021 for IT services. We issue invoices and commercial proposals in Portuguese and English for internal procurement purposes.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from
procurement teams.

Our institution is not a university — we are a research institute. Are we eligible?
Sim.
"Unlimited users" — does that really mean unlimited?
Yes. Anyone who registers with a verified institutional domain email has access. We do not count licences, do not monitor per-user usage, and do not charge overages. £499/month is the total cost, regardless of how many people use it.
What data does Lacuna Labs store about our students?
We store the identity hash (a cryptographic fingerprint of the email — the email itself is never stored), the institution domain, and the access tier. No documents, no queries, no analysis results are ever transmitted to our servers. All analysis runs locally in the student's browser.
Does this require IT integration or SSO?
No. Students register with their institutional email at lacunalabs.eu/login. The system validates the domain automatically. No Active Directory integration, no SAML configuration, no IT involvement required. If you want SSO, that is available in Gaptrium™ Core.
What happens when a student graduates?
When their institutional email domain is no longer active, their account access expires at the next renewal. Students can export their projects and saved analyses before leaving. Their locally-stored data remains on their own device.
Can we pilot before committing to the annual fee?
Yes. We offer a 30-day institutional pilot for free. Contact us with your domain and we will activate it. No payment card required for the pilot. Subscription is billed annually at £499/month (£5,988/year).
Is this available for developing-country universities?
Yes. £499/month is intentionally set below what any individual Signal or Core licence costs, specifically to make this accessible to institutions in any country. If £500 is still a barrier, contact us — we have a scholarship programme for institutions in the lowest-income countries.
What is included vs excluded compared to Gaptrium™ Signal?
Education includes all Scope features: Heat Map, Gap Analysis, Pulse Editorial, Pulse Research, Timeline, Clusters, AI Advisor, export CSV/HTML/PNG. Not included: Trend Discovery, Pulse Patents, Author Intelligence, News Intelligence, Patent Explorer, PDF export. These are Signal/Core features for professional intelligence teams.
