Timeline Analysis — Track How Research Topics Evolve Over Time

Research fields do not stand still. Topics emerge, peak, and fade. Paradigms shift. Timeline Analysis makes that temporal dimension visible — letting you position your work in the context of where the field is going, not just where it has been.

What is Timeline Analysis?

Timeline Analysis extracts publication dates from your documents and plots the frequency of each analytical term across time. The result is a set of time series — one per term — showing how the prominence of each concept has changed across your corpus. Rising lines are emerging topics. Falling lines are paradigms in decline. Flat lines are stable foundations.

How it works

Gaptrium™ reads the date metadata from each PDF (or the date you assign to each document). For each time interval you define — month, quarter, year — it counts how many documents from that period contain each term. The result is a multi-line chart with one line per term, plotted across your chosen time axis. Every data point is a count, not an inference.

Who uses Timeline Analysis?

🎓

PhD & Research Positioning

Show the trajectory of your research field. If your key terms are on a rising curve, you are working in an emerging area. If they are flat, you are in a stable field. If they are declining — that is a finding too.

📰

Media and Narrative Analysis

Track which topics are gaining or losing prominence in a corpus of news articles, policy documents, or social media reports across time.

🏭

Technology Roadmapping

Identify which technologies are accelerating in the patent and research literature — before they appear in mainstream product announcements.

🔬

Systematic Review Protocol

Document the temporal scope of your review with evidence. Show which periods have the highest density of literature on your topic — and which periods are under-represented.

Frequently asked questions

What date formats does Timeline Analysis recognise?

Gaptrium™ reads standard PDF metadata dates. If your PDFs do not have embedded dates, you can assign dates manually to each document in the corpus.

What is the minimum time range for a meaningful timeline?

Timeline Analysis works with any range. For research literature, a 5–10 year range with annual intervals is typically most informative. For news or policy documents, monthly or quarterly intervals may be more relevant.

Can I compare timelines across two corpora?

Yes. The corpus comparison feature lets you plot timelines from two different corpora on the same chart — showing how two bodies of literature have evolved differently over the same period.

Is Timeline Analysis affected by uneven document distribution across time?

The raw frequency count can be normalised by the number of documents per period, giving you a proportion rather than an absolute count. This corrects for corpora with more recent documents.

Does Timeline Analysis use AI to infer publication dates?

No. Gaptrium™ uses only explicit date metadata from your documents or dates you assign manually. No inference or estimation is involved.
