Gap Analysis — Find What the Literature Is Ignoring

The most valuable insight in any literature review is not what the literature says — it is what it does not say. Gaptrium™ Gap Analysis locates those silences with mathematical precision.

What is Gap Analysis?

Gap Analysis compares the frequency of every term across your entire corpus and ranks terms by the gap between their presence and their coverage. A term that appears in many documents but never as a primary focus is a gap. A term absent from almost all documents is an opportunity. The output is a ranked list of gaps, each traceable to specific documents.

How it works

Gaptrium™ builds a frequency matrix across your corpus. Gap Analysis then applies a coverage model: terms that appear broadly but shallowly score high on the gap index. Terms that appear deeply in a small number of documents score as concentrations. The difference between the two is the gap — the territory the literature has visited but never settled.

Who uses Gap Analysis?

🎓

PhD & Master's Research

Identify the exact gap your thesis will fill. Arrive at your supervisory meeting with a ranked list of under-covered topics — each supported by document-level evidence.

🔬

Grant Applications

Funders want to know why your research is necessary. Gap Analysis gives you the evidence: here is the frequency of this topic, here is its coverage depth, here is the gap.

💊

Pharmaceutical R&D

Find therapeutic targets that appear in the literature but have not been deeply explored. The gap between mention and depth is where opportunity lives.

📰

Investigative Journalism

Identify which topics mainstream coverage has mentioned but never investigated deeply. The gap is the story.

Frequently asked questions

How is Gap Analysis different from a simple keyword search?

A keyword search tells you how many times a term appears. Gap Analysis tells you how that frequency compares to the depth of coverage — a term that appears 40 times but only at surface level across 40 documents is a very different finding from a term that appears 40 times concentrated in 3 documents.

Can I define my own gap threshold?

Yes. Gaptrium™ lets you adjust the coverage threshold and the gap sensitivity to match the specific requirements of your field.

Is Gap Analysis available on the free trial?

Yes, with the trial limit of 20 documents and 50 terms.

How do I cite a Gap Analysis result in a paper?

Each gap result includes the term, its document frequency, its coverage score, and the list of documents in which it appears. These are citable as primary data in the methods section of a systematic review.

Can two researchers run the same Gap Analysis and get the same result?

Yes — deterministically. Given the same corpus and the same terms, Gap Analysis produces the same output on any device by any researcher. This reproducibility is a core requirement for peer review.
